  • March – The name of The IABS Newsletter is changed to Cryonics.
  • September – K. Eric Drexler publishes the paper "Molecular engineering: An approach to the development of general capabilities for molecular manipulation", the first one suggesting that nanotechnology could reverse freezing injury.
