- January 12 – Hollywood, Florida, United States proclaims January 12, 2017 as Dr. James Bedford Day.
- May 8 – Zhan Wenlian becomes the first person cryopreserved by the Shandong Yinfeng Life Science Research Institute.
- August 8 – The philosophers Francesca Minerva and Anders Sandberg publish "Euthanasia and cryothanasia", an article where they argue that administering cryothanasia is ethically different from administering euthanasia, and objections to euthanasia should not apply to cryothanasia.
- December 31 – The new bylaws of the Society for Cryobiology take effect, allowing cryonicists to join again.
