Karl Werner is a former New York industrial designer who coined the word "cryonics" in 1965.[1] "Cryonics" is a portmanteau of "cryo-" and "bionics".[2] The new word was used in the name of the Cryonics Society of New York that was founded by Harold Costello, Curtis Henderson, Saul Kent, James Sutton, and Werner in 1965.[1][3] Three years later, Werner drifted away from cryonics and became involved in Scientology.[4] He left Scientology after having been active in it for four or five years.[5] He has not returned to cryonics, though he remains proud to be the one who named it.[5]
