Unverfroren is a 2016 novel written by Madlen Jacobshagen.

Plot summary

When his beloved daughter Saskia dies from cancer, father Georg decides to freeze her. She is to be put on hold until her hereditary disease can be cured. He does not let anyone in on the matter because freezing people is a punishable offense in Germany. A long period of anxious waiting follows. After 16 years, he learns that it has already been possible in the USA to bring frozen people back to life. At the same time, genetic interventions in their cancer are well advanced. He gives the order to thaw and accompanies the process with the greatest tension. It works surprisingly well with Saskia. Saskia didn't notice anything about the procedure. After a long period of rehabilitation, she is trying to come to terms with her new life in Hamburg. Georg had naively assumed that his mother and brother would enthusiastically take her back. But her mother remains extremely skeptical about her, and her brother has slipped into alcoholism. Violent family conflicts arise. Saskia resumes her studies, but has great problems making friends with her peers. Soon she is mocked because she is completely unfamiliar with the new means of communication. When she realizes that she is being massively bullied on Facebook, she is so desperate that she wants to take her own life. She is rescued at the last minute by a young man who, some time later, becomes her lover. Georg couldn't prevent the press from getting wind of her healing. A press storm breaks out and soon everyone is talking about her unusual healing. Many enthusiastically celebrate the medical success, but others fiercely reject the procedure that has taken place. Members of a sect even call her a devil woman and want to kill her. She has to stay hidden. This works very well, up to Georg's rumored trial, which leads to a scandal.
