Born in Brooklyn, New York City, he received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and proceeded into an illustrious career in clinical and basic eye research, first in the Neurosurgical Division at the National Institutes of Health and later in the National Eye Institute. He moved to Columbia University in 1978. Gouras was renowned in, among others, clinical electrophysiology of the retina, elucidation of color vision, and retinal transplantation for the treatment of degenerative diseases, all of which he was a pioneer and leader with a lasting impact today as seen in many textbooks.<ref name="Legacy" /><br />
