Richardson signed up for [[neuropreservation]] with the [[Alcor Life Extension Foundation]] in 2004.<ref name="Press releases" /> He had a long career as a pharmacist in Burlington. He was married, but had no children, and his wife predeceased him.<ref name="Court decision" />

He legally died on February 19, 2009, having suffered from dementia the year before his death.<ref name="Press releases" /> His brother and sister had him [[Embalming|embalmed]] and then buried in Burlington on February 21, 2009.<ref name="Court decision" /> Alcor learned of his death two months afterwards, when his brother asked Alcor to refund the money paid.<ref name="Press releases" />

After unsuccessful discussions with his brother and sister to obtain access to the remains, Alcor petitioned the Iowa District Court for Des Moines County on June 8, 2009.
