=== No superabundance without transhumanism ===

A later section of the book, in Chapter 4 ("Principles and priorities"), argues that superabundance cannot be achieved without transhumanism:

<blockquote>
In order for us to achieve the superabundance envisioned... there will first have to be significant improvements to human nature. Superabundance will not feature present-day humans in a new environment. It will feature humans enhanced in fundamental ways, freed from core defects that have hitherto limited our accomplishments. It will feature humans on a transhumanist journey towards transcendent posthuman capabilities.

Attempting to progress the other dimensions of abundance, without addressing the deep-rooted flaws in human nature, is a route filled with grave dangers. Humans with more power, but with the same core characteristics as present, are liable to inflict horrendous damage on each other and on our environment. We might become much stronger, but without gaining more empathy. We might become much cleverer, but without gaining more wisdom. We might become more devious and more manipulative. We might become much more skilled in deceiving each other, and indeed, in deceiving ourselves. Hence the core transhumanist assertion that it is impossible to create a significantly better world without significantly improving human nature in parallel.
