The first use of the term as the name of a philosophy was by [[Julian Huxley]], who in 1951 described transhumanism as

Some early online definitions of transhumanism are from 1997 from [[Anders Sandberg]]'s website. Sandberg defined transhumanism thus:

As recorded in the Extropy Journal #7 published in Spring 1991<ref>[https://github.com/Extropians/Extropy/blob/master/Extropy-07.pdf Extropy-07.pdf]</ref>, [[Max More]] gave this definition of transhumanism, along with the date 1990:

<blockquote>A philosophy of life focusing on self-transformation into a condition beyond that of the human.</blockquote>

In a second version of the same set of "neologisms" published in August 1994<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/19980110162302/http:/www.extropy.com/neologo.htm Neologisms, 1994]</ref>, that definition had evolved as follows (though still gave 1990 as its date of origination):

<blockquote>Transhumanism is a class of philosophies of life that seek the continuation and acceleration of the evolution of intelligent life beyond its currently human form and human limitations by means of science and technology, guided by life-promoting principles and values.</blockquote>

[[Natasha Vita-More]] emphasises [[morphological freedom]], complete self-control and [[space exploration]].

In 2003 Nick Bostrom described the idea as:

In later years, both broader and more specific definitions have been attempted such as 2015:

Today, as the movement grows in popularity and widens appeal, the definition itself is subject to frequent semantic debates around inclusion, exclusion or focus of its ideas.
