The aliens in the movie are actually transhumans who rule the galaxy, harvesting Earth for [[life extension]]/[[longevity]] related resources in order to keep themselves alive. It's never explored why thousand-year-old civilizations of sentient beings must be utilised for this process rather than a synthetic substitute. As such immortality is simultaneously villianised in a [[Vampire|vampirific]] sense of monstrous soulless beings preying on the innocent, as well as a critique of the [[oligarchic transhumanism|oligarchic]] power structures which reserve these advanced medical technologies for themselves.
