Aquaporin-1 (AQP-1) (Aquaporin-CHIP) (Urine water channel) (Water channel protein for red blood cells and kidney proximal tubule) [CHIP28] ==Publications== {{medline-entry |title=Blue Light Induces Down-Regulation of Aquaporin 1, 3, and 9 in Human Keratinocytes. |pubmed-url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30400272 |abstract=The development in digital screen technology has exponentially increased in the last decades, and many of today's electronic devices use light-emitting diode (LED) technology producing very strong blue light (BL) waves. Long-term exposure at LED-BL seems to have an implication in the dehydration of the epidermis, in the alterations of shape and number of the keratinocytes, and in the aging of the skin. Aquaporins (AQPs) are water membrane channels that permeate both water and glycerol and play an important role in the hydration of epidermis, as well as in proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes. Thus, we have hypothesized that AQPs could be involved in the aging of the skin exposed to LED-BL. Therefore, we have examined the expression of AQPs in human keratinocytes exposed to LED-BL at dose of 45 J/cm², used as an in vitro model to produce the general features of photo aging of the skin. The aim was to verify if LED-BL induces changes of the basal levels of AQPs. The keratinocytes exposure to LED-BL produced an increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS), an activation of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), an alteration of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and a down-regulation of AQP1, 3 and 9. These findings are preliminary evidences that may be used as starting points for further investigations about the mechanistic involvement of AQP1, 3, and 9 in LED-BL-induced skin aging. |keywords=* aquaporin * blue light * keratinocytes * oxidative stress * photo aging * skin |full-text-url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6262559 }} {{medline-entry |title=[Age-related changes of water transport by corneal endothelial cells in rats.] |pubmed-url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29322730 |abstract=Senescence-associated alterations in structure and function of cornea make it more sensitive to traumas and disease. Trauma of cornea leads to edema and vision impairment and only corneal transplantation remains the effective for vision correction. Role of aquaporins for cornea endothelium function, as well as age-related changes of their activity, are not entirely understood. Herein, we studied changes with age the water permeability (Pf) of the plasma membranes of the corneal endothelial cells and the level of expression in them of the mRNA genes of the water channels of the aquaporins AQP1 and AQP3 in Wistar and senescence-accelerated OXYS rats. From the age of 3 to 18 months, Pf in Wistar rats increased, in OXYS - decreased and was twice lower than in Wistar rats. The expression of aqp1 mRNA (studied by RT-PCR) in the endothelium was the same in Wistar and OXYS rats at the age of 3 months. By the age of 18 months, it increased only in Wistar rats and became twice higher than in OXYS rats. The expression of aqp3 mRNA in the endothelium of 3-month-old OXYS rats was half that of Wistar rats and did not change with age, while in Wistar rats it decreased and at 18 months was 4 times lower than in 3 months. We supposed that increased water permeability of endothelial cells in Wistar rats is adaptive and compensates for the decrease in endothelial cell density with age, while the accelerated aging of OXYS rats abolishes this compensation. |mesh-terms=* Age Factors * Aging * Animals * Aquaporin 1 * Aquaporin 3 * Disease Models, Animal * Endothelial Cells * Epithelium, Corneal * RNA, Messenger * Rats * Rats, Wistar |keywords=* aging * cornea endothelium * senescence-accelerated OXYS rats * water permeability }} {{medline-entry |title=Investigation of the effects of aging on the expression of aquaporin 1 and aquaporin 4 protein in heart tissue. |pubmed-url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27443479 |abstract=Aquaporin (AQP) 1 and AQP 4 are expressed in human heart and several studies have been focused on these two aquaporins. For this purpose, the present study is aimed to research the effects of aging on AQP 1 and AQP 4 in heart tissue. In this study, 14 Balb/C type white mice were used. Animals were divided into two equal groups. Group I consisted of 2-month-old young animals (n=7), and group II consisted of 18-month-old animals (n=7). To determine the AQP1 and AQP4 expression in the myocardium, the heart tissue was removed to perform western blotting and immunohistochemical and histopathological evaluations. Muscle fibers of the heart in aged animals were more irregular and loosely organized in hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) stained sections. Hscore analysis revealed that AQP1 and AQP4 immunoreactivity significantly increased in heart tissues of old mice compared with those of young mice (p<0.001). In addition, AQP1 and AQP4 protein expressions in the tissues of old animals were increased significantly according to western blot analysis (p=0.018 and p<0.001 for AQP1 and AQP4, respectively). Increased AQP1 and AQP4 levels in the heart tissue may be correlated with the maintenance of water and electrolytes balance, which decreases with aging. In this context, it might be the result of a compensatory response to decreased AQP4 functions. In addition, this increase with aging as demonstrated in our study might be one of the factors that increases the tendency of ischemia in elder people. |mesh-terms=* Aging * Animals * Aquaporin 1 * Aquaporin 4 * Female * Mice * Mice, Inbred BALB C * Myocardial Ischemia * Myocardium |full-text-url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5324856 }} {{medline-entry |title=Seasonal and Ageing-Depending Changes of Aquaporins 1 and 9 Expression in the Genital Tract of Buffalo Bulls (Bubalus bubalis). |pubmed-url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27260501 |abstract=The presence of Aquaporins 1 (AQP1) and 9 (AQP9), integral membrane water channels that facilitate rapid passive movement of water and solutes, was immunohistochemically detected in the excurrent ducts collected from sexually mature buffalo bulls of proven fertility during the mating (late autumn-winter) and non-mating (late spring to the beginning of autumn) seasons. Furthermore, the research was performed also on the epididymal cauda of a senile buffalo bull with inactive testis. Aquaporins 1 and 9 were immunolocalized at distinct levels. In the efferent ducts, AQP1 immunoreactivity was strongly evidenced at the apical surface of the non-ciliated cells and weakly along the basal membrane of the epithelial cells. The latter reactivity disappeared during the non-mating season. No AQP1 immunoreactivity was detected in the epithelium of epididymis and vas deferens, whereas AQP1 was expressed in the smooth muscle layer of the vas deferens. Aquaporin 1 was present in the blood vessels and in small nerve bundles all along the genital tract. The supranuclear zone of the epididymal principal cells was AQP9 immunoreactive, limited to the corpus and cauda regions, and vas deferens. The samples collected in the two reproductive seasons showed a weaker AQP9 immunoreactivity during the non-mating season. A typical AQP9 immunoreactivity was noticed in the old buffalo examined. The tested AQP molecules showed a different expression pattern in comparison with laboratory mammals, primates, equine, dog and cat. In addition, seasonal differences were noticed which are possibly useful in regard to the comprehension of the morphophysiology of reproduction in the bubaline species, which are still a matter of debate. |mesh-terms=* Aging * Animals * Aquaporins * Buffaloes * Gene Expression Regulation * Genitalia, Male * Male * Seasons |full-text-url=https://sci-hub.do/10.1111/rda.12713 }} {{medline-entry |title=Investigation of age-related changes in the expression of aquaporin-1 and aquaporin-5 in the salivary glands of mice. |pubmed-url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27067150 |abstract=The increased AQP5 expression associated with ageing in glands, which mainly secreted a serous solution, suggests a compensation for the decreased amount of saliva secretion associated with age progression. To investigate the change in aquaporin-1 (AQP1) and aquaporin-5 (AQP5) expression in the salivary glands in young and elder mice. Twelve female mice from the Balb/C genus (30-50 g) were used. The mice were separated into two groups: Group I had 2-month-old mice and Group II had 18-month-old mice. Salivary glands (glandula parotidea, glandula sublungualis, glandula submaxillaris) were excised and examined immunohistochemically and histopathologically. AQP1 and AQP5 expression of young and elder mice was evaluated using the H-score. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Upon histopathological examination, the acini of glands were found to be atrophic in elder mice. The number and diameter of intercalated ducts were increased. Indeed, the amount of adipose tissue in the gland was increased. Upon immunohistochemical examination, both AQP1 and AQP5 levels in sublingual glands of elder mice were increased (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, only AQP5 levels were increased in the parotid gland of elder mice (p < 0.01). |mesh-terms=* Aging * Animals * Aquaporin 1 * Aquaporin 5 * Female * Immunohistochemistry * Mice, Inbred BALB C * Salivary Glands |keywords=* Ageing * aquaporins * mice * salivary glands |full-text-url=https://sci-hub.do/10.3109/00016489.2016.1165353 }} {{medline-entry |title=The effects of high doses of nandrolone decanoate and exercise on prostate microvasculature of adult and older rats. |pubmed-url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25447446 |abstract=The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the interaction between the abusive use of nandrolone decanoate (ND) and physical activity on the prostate structure of adult and older rats. We evaluated whether the use of ND, associated or not with physical exercise during the post-pubertal stage, interferes with the morphophysiology of the prostate. Fifty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into eight groups. The animals were treated for eight weeks and divided into sedentary and trained groups, with or without ND use. Four groups were sacrificed 48 h after the end of the eight week experiment (adult groups), and four other groups were sacrificed at 300 days of age (older groups). The prostate was collected and processed for stereological and histopathological analysis and for the expression of AQP1 and VEGF by the Western blotting technique. Both ND and physical activity altered the ventral prostate structure of the rats; the AQP1 and VEGF expression increased in young animals subjected to physical exercise. Thus, it was concluded that the use of ND, associated or not with exercise during the post-pubertal stage, interferes with the morphophysiology of the prostate. |mesh-terms=* Aging * Anabolic Agents * Animals * Aquaporin 1 * Body Weight * Epididymis * Male * Microcirculation * Nandrolone * Nandrolone Decanoate * Organ Size * Physical Conditioning, Animal * Prostate * Rats * Rats, Sprague-Dawley * Sexual Maturation * Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A |keywords=* AQP1 * Anabolic * Resistance physical exercise * VEGF * Ventral prostate |full-text-url=https://sci-hub.do/10.1016/j.lfs.2014.11.006 }}
