Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification or very commonly GMO, is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome using biotechnology. It is a set of technologies used to change the genetic makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes within and across species boundaries to produce improved or novel organisms.

Genetic testing may be used by couples seeking to have children to avoid preventable hereditary health conditiona. The progression of this concept may be known as super babies, or less charitably, eugenics.
